Hiking map of the "Wettersteingebirge" in Germany

This hiking map of the "Wettersteingebirge" includes many trails, and some POIs as well. It is meant to be an extension to the commerical "Topo Deutschland" from Garmin, because there are no landscape information or any of that. The site is only in german, but it's still possible to find everything, and in case you get lost google translate might help you. The map can be downloaded as single .img file, which you can either integrate manually in Mapsource or send it directly to your Garmin GPS device

Really good topo-map of Poland

This excellent topographic map can be downloaded only from a polish site. But it's still quite easy to navigate through it. Just klick on Garmin on the menu at the right side, and the you will see the available maps. The maps are included in a .exe file which includes the map automatically into Mapsource, from where you can easily send it to your Gamrin GPS device. (Found here)

Review of the new Garmin Oregon series

Garmin just introduced the new GPS series "Oregon". The Oregon GPS devices feature:
  • LCD touchscreen display (240 x 400 pixels)
  • WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) capability improves GPS accuracy to within 3 meters
  • Preloaded topographic maps
  • Paperless Geocaching
  • Built-in 3D DEM (Digital Elevation Model) basemap
  • 3D elevation view
  • Wireless exchange of user routes, tracks, waypoints, geocaches and images
  • ..... and a lot more
This definetly includes some novelties which were not available before.
But how good is it really?
Well the touchscreen is amazing! You can't get lost any more. Navigation on the map is done as easy as possible: to pan across the map, simply touch the screen and drag the map in any direction, for more information about a point of interest on the map, just touch it and an info-box pops up with precise location and distance-to data.
The 3D View is not really necessary for navigation but it is definetly a nice feature which gives you an idea of how many hills to climb there are still ahead of you.
The Geocaching feature is definitely one of the best features in the series. The only question is whether somebody who does (only) Geocaching is willing to spend 600$ for the GPS. The feature allows you not only to download the coordinates directly to your device. It will also download the description, rating and everything else.

Well there's a lot more to write about the new Oregon GPS device, but the best thing is to test it yourself!
All we can say is that it is definetly a really great GPS with lots of nice and useful features! Whether you want to spend 600$ for something that is in 90% of the time not more than a toy you have to decide yourself.

Free Garmin maps of most Canadian provinces

The Ibycus Map Project is a really amazing project where you can find extremely detailed topographic maps of most of the southern Canadian provinces.
The quality of the maps is better (!) than the quality of the commercial Topo Canada. The only disadvantage is that the roads have no names. But except for that the maps are the best free maps ever! The maps are downloaded as .exe file which integrates them automatically into Mapsource from where you can send them to your Garmin GPS easily. The .exe files includes all maps, and is quite big because of that (1,5GB).
